Terrestrial Stilling Projected to Continue in the Northern Hemisphere Mid‐Latitudes

چکیده
The near-surface wind speed over land has declined in recent decades, a trend known as terrestrial stilling (TS). However, studies have indicated reversal of the TS during last decade, triggering renovated interest future changes. This study examines Northern Hemisphere (NH) areas and explores its changes under Model Inter-comparison Projection Phase 6 Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) scenarios. results show that NH mid-latitude will likely continue whole 21st century mid-to-high greenhouse warmings (SSPs-245, 370, 585). Nevertheless, if world reduces carbon emissions substantially (SSP-126), be interrupted reversed after mid-21st century. projected shows seasonal differences, with largest (smallest) decreasing trends boreal summer (winter). Moreover, decade is suggested multi-decadal fluctuation related to Pacific Atlantic oscillations. In addition, this proposes increased upper-air warming climate could play key role reducing surface speed. continuing provides strong implications for environment energy development, particularly countries mid-latitudes.

متن کاملNorthern Hemisphere stratospheric winds in higher midlatitudes: longitudinal distribution and long-term trends
The Brewer–Dobson circulation (mainly meridional circulation) is very important for stratospheric ozone dynamics and thus for the overall state of the stratosphere. There are some indications that the meridional circulation in the stratosphere could be longitudinally dependent, which would have an impact on the ozone distribution. Therefore, we analyse here the meridional component of the strat...
متن کاملPhotochemistry of HOx in the upper troposphere at northern midlatitudes
The factors controlling the concentrations of HOx radicals (= OH + peroxy) in the upper troposphere (8-12 km) are examined using concurrent aircraft observations of OH, HO2, H2O2, CH3OOH, and CH2O made during the Subsonic Assessment Ozone and Nitrogen Oxide Experiment (SONEX) at northern midlatitudes in the fall. These observations, complemented by concurrent measurements of O3, H2O, NO, peroxy...
متن کاملProjected climate-induced faunal change in the Western Hemisphere.
Climate change is predicted to be one of the greatest drivers of ecological change in the coming century. Increases in temperature over the last century have clearly been linked to shifts in species distributions. Given the magnitude of projected future climatic changes, we can expect even larger range shifts in the coming century. These changes will, in turn, alter ecological communities and t...
متن کاملSkewness modes in the Northern Hemisphere winter
The probability distribution of daily Northern Hemisphere streamfunction fluctuations at 500 hPa in winter is skewed at most locations. Large positive anomalies are more likely north of 50N with maximum values of the skewness in the North Pacific and North Atlantic region. In this study we develop two novel methodologies in order to diagnose the underlying circulation structures associated with...
